The alligator in the pool

there was a pool in the
basement of the house
and in it swam large fish
and an alligator.

i swam with the alligator
it wanted to be near me
it was lonely
it pushed up close against
me

i remained still
& tried to love its closeness

i was not afraid
i was near death

i was not afraid
of the alligator in the pool
